Consider the Lobster
As a vegetarian and an activist, I appreciated David Foster Wallace's perspective on the Maine Lobster Festival. The ethical issue of boiling a creature alive in the spirit of gluttony and tradition doesn't rile me up either. Wallace is well-spoken, intelligent, descriptive, and entertaining. I appreciate his snarkiness and his innovational literary style of footnotes made the article that much more interesting to read. However, he's kind of an ass. Every paragraph holds a tinge of arrogance and superiority. The fact that I enjoyed it so much reminded me to find some humility and to keep an open mind while writing. This event is a beloved festival that Maine has held for 56 years, and in all of the judgement of the article the appreciation for that was definitely lost.
